Adelaide counts down to global travel show

South Australia will be thrust into the international spotlight this month when Adelaide hosts one of the world’s largest travel trade shows for the first time.

Tourism Minister Jane Lomax-Smith says the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) will give the State an unprecedented opportunity to showcase its attractions.

ATE will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 17 to 23 June.

“More than 600 travel experts from more than 40 countries will converge on our State for this unique event, which is a major coup for South Australia,” Dr Lomax-Smith says.

“The event will inject around $10m into the local economy and generate around 13,000 visitor nights in Adelaide.

“Most importantly, ATE will help generate billions of dollars in export earnings as a result of business generated at the event, positioning South Australia and Australia as leading holiday destinations.

“This will mean more jobs for South Australians as the State’s tourism industry grows.

“ATE will allow South Australian tourism operators to meet with some of the most influential tourism wholesalers from across the globe.

“Wholesalers will also have the opportunity to visit some of our finest attractions and experience the delights of Adelaide and South Australia first-hand.

“These are the people who put together holiday packages and recommend destinations to travellers from around the globe – so the ongoing benefits to our State are obvious.

“ATE will also attract about 50 international tourism journalists who will report on the best of South Australia and what’s new in the Australian travel and tourism industry.

“This event will open up a whole host of exciting opportunities for South Australian tourism operators and generate worldwide coverage of the State’s unique attractions.

“ATE continues an exciting year of events for South Australia’s tourism industry, following on from a jam-packed events calendar at the start of the year.

“We also have some fantastic sporting events ahead, including the 14-day Asian Women’s Soccer Championships in July and a qualifier match between the Socceroos and Lebanon on 31 August.”
