Events: This MonthSOMETHING ON SATURDAY Until 25 August Adelaide Festival Centre, King William Road, Adelaide The Adelaide Festival Centre’s winter program of fantastic entertainment for children aged 3-10 years and their families continues this month. Every Saturday until 25 August, there will be a different performance, with all tickets priced at only $10. This year’s program includes magic shows, puppetry, all types of dancing and a rock concert. GRACE CROWLEY: BEING MODERN Until 28 October Art Gallery of South Australia, North Terrace, Adelaide Grace Crowley (1890-1979) was one of the great ‘modern Australian women’ whose pioneering paintings of the 1920s and 30s revitalised art in this country. Now, nearly thirty years after her death, the national travelling exhibition Grace Crowley: Being Modern offers a fresh look at Crowley’s art, from her renowned modernist and cubist pictures, to her bold geometric abstracts. Bursting with vibrant colour, this important exhibition introduces a new generation to this sophisticated, experimental artist who worked at the cutting-edge of modern art in Australia. WHALE WATCHING SEASON Until 31 October Various locations on the Eyre and Fleurieu peninsulas Each year between June and October, giant Southern Right Whales return to South Australia’s waters. It is estimated that only 3000 Southern Right Whales exist in the world, making viewing of these splendid creatures a memorable occasion. With up to 100 Southern Right Whales frolicking just metres from the towering Bunda Cliffs, Head of Bight on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula is one of the best places in the world to see the annual breeding migration of these awesome creatures. Another excellent place for whale spotting is Encounter Bay on the Fleurieu Peninsula, where Southern Right Whales breed and calve in waters very near the shore. EVERYTHING'S F**KED - THE MUSICAL 1-18 August Adelaide Festival Centre, King William Road, Adelaide This is a piece of groundbreaking home-brewed musical theatre, featuring a beats-driven electronic soundtrack and a cast comprising some of Australia's best young performers. It tells the gritty, inspiring and often hilarious story of four twenty-somethings who share a house under the flight path in an Australian city. Set against the events of September 11, the imperative to succeed and alienating corporate workplaces, Everything's F**ked shows how faith, love, and resilience get us through the day and on with our lives, as the world falls down around us. As its name suggests, this show is suitable for mature audiences. Click here for more information. 2007 SALA FESTIVAL 3-19 August Venues across South Australia During the two weeks of the SALA Festival, art steps out of the gallery and takes over the streets, restaurants, offices, shops and pubs of South Australia. This free event is your chance to enjoy, engage with, and be entertained by local art and the people who create it. Attend an exhibition, visit an artist’s studio, take a tour of street art or get creative at an art workshop. Wherever you are in Adelaide, there’s guaranteed to be a free SALA festival event happening just around the corner – and there’s also lots happening in regional SA. TOYOTA KLUGER RALLY SA 10-12 August Barossa Rev-heads rejoice! Australia's most popular and spectator-friendly round of the Australian Rally Championships is on again amid the vineyards of South Australia's Barossa wine region. It’s three days of spectacular jumps, water crossings and amazing sideways, sliding, flat-out rally action. Powering up at picturesque Tanunda, then speeding through the forests of Mount Crawford, this year’s race will be all about speed, noise and excitement. Click here for more information. DAZZLING DEMIDENKO 16-18 August Adelaide Town Hall, King William Street, Adelaide The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra presents the renowned pianist Nikolai Demidenko live in concert. Not only a keyboard phenomenon; he’s been described as a force of nature. The BBC Music Magazine called his playing “breathtaking”. The concert program opens evocatively with the luxuriant textures of the suite from Richard Meale’s opera Mer de Glace, to mark his 75th birthday. Then comes Prokofiev’s spicily brilliant Third Concerto, an ideal showcase for Demidenko’s unique artistry. Finally, abandon yourselves to Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony – Wagner dubbed it ‘the apotheosis of the dance’ and its intoxicating joy and energy never fails to inspire a heartfelt ovation. LANGHORNE CREEK CELLAR TREASURES WEEKEND 18-19 August Various wineries around Langhorne Creek, Fleurieu Peninsula This event is an exclusive opportunity to taste and purchase wines from extraordinary vintages and a real treat for wine lovers. It’s also a great excuse to spend the weekend in Langhorne Creek – a picturesque wine region on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Bleasdale, Bremerton, Lake Breeze, Kimbolton and Oddfellows wineries have raided their cellars for the occasion and blown the dust off some of their museum wines for the event. KADINA ANNUAL SHOW 18-19 August Kadina, Yorke Peninsula This great traditional country show is held in the largest town on the Yorke Peninsula and is a real family event. Kadina is the unofficial capital of the Copper Triangle, with a rich mining history and a proud tradition of friendly hospitality. You’ll feel welcomed in Kadina, and delighted by the range of entertainment and amusements at its annual show. Enjoy demonstrations of lace making, wool spinning and wood craft. Browse displays of engines, motorcycles, gems and minerals. Meet sheep, cattle and goats. Check out the arts and crafts, cooking, produce and photography. THE LITTLE GENTLEMAN 22 August - 1 September Adelaide Festival Centre, King William Road, Adelaide This new production by Australia's flagship performing arts company for children is based on a well-loved Swedish story. It provides a moving and heart warming experience for children over the age of five and their families, with an inspiring story that gently invites its young audience on a journey of discovery with the little gentleman himself. A dog, a girl and a string quartet complete the cast as the little gentleman discovers the joy of friendship, the pain of betrayal, the importance of sharing, and the true value of love.
