AUSTRALASIAN MASTERS GAMES

Australia's largest multisport festival returns to Adelaide in October bigger and better than ever. Following the successful staging of the 10th Australian Masters Games in October 2005, Adelaide will host the Australasian Masters Games from 5-14 October 2007. Expect a fantastic sports program, first class entertainment and an enviable social calendar. Come and join 10,000 participants from Australia, Oceania and the Asia Pacific region compete in more than 50 sports.

RIVERLAND RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

COONAWARRA CABERNET CELEBRATIONS
19-21 October
Head to one of Australia’s pre-eminent red wine regions for a weekend of pure indulgence. Savour tastings of divine Cabernet Sauvignon at more than 20 cellar doors, as well as having the chance to take part in everything from a gourmet breakfast to a night of live music. Take a guided tour of Penola and discover the town’s history, taste local gourmet goodies such as the famous Wagyu Beef Pie, treat yourself to a relaxing massage and chat to the region’s wine makers. Head down to the McLaren Vale Visitor Information Centre for this wonderful alfresco event. Meet the cheese makers, taste sensational cheeses matched with local wines and learn about the art of speciality cheese making at this tasty celebration of all things cheese. As well as the food and wine, the event will also feature live entertainment from Cabernet Cabaret and face painting for the children.

PANASONIC WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGE
21-28 October
The World Solar Challenge is the race to the future, the ‘brain-sport’ of our time, and the fascinating story of how competitors journey 3,000km powered by nothing more than the sun. Teams and individuals from corporations and universities all over the world come here to design and drive their solar cars through the desert from Darwin to Adelaide. The event celebrates achievement, courage and the practical application of scientific knowledge in pursuit of a safer, smarter, greener world. It’s also fun to watch.

FLEURIEU FOLK FESTIVAL

The Fleurieu Folk Festival is free family fun!
Set in the beautiful seaside town of Willunga, this free festival is a fabulous weekend of music, dance, bush poetry, children's entertainment and food. Bring your instrument of choice and join in the jams, or step on stage at a blackboard concert. Kick up your heels at the Bush Dance. Browse the craft stalls and the Saturday Farmers Market. Watch the kids have fun with face painting, maypole dancing, clowns, Punch and Judy and the Young Talent Showcase. Wetlands and Waders Festival

The Limestone Coast’s rich environment and artistic talent will be celebrated through the 2007 Wetlands & Waders Festival, launched last week. The Wetlands and Waders Festival celebrates the annual mass migration of birds from as far away as the Arctic Circle to the waterways of the Limestone Coast. Entry to the Wetlands and Waders Festival is free, and the participating artworks can be viewed at Mount Gambier’s Riddoch Art Gallery, until 4 November 2007; at the Millicent Art Gallery 9 November – 9 December 2007; and at the Meningie Cheese Factory Restaurant 12 December – 30 January 2008.

Whale Watching Season

Coastlines of the Fleurieu and Eyre Peninsulas
Each year between June and October, giant Southern Right Whales return to South Australia’s waters. With up to 100 Southern Right Whales frolicking just metres from the towering Bunda Cliffs, Head of Bight on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula is one of the best places in the world to see the annual breeding migration of these awesome creatures. Another excellent place for whale spotting is Encounter Bay on the Fleurieu Peninsula, where Southern Right Whales breed and calve in waters very near the shore.

The Barossa Band Festival

The Melbourne Cup Comes to Wallaroo

When the Melbourne Cup comes to Wallaroo as part of a national tour, the locals plan to celebrate in inimitable Wallaroo style. At 10am there’s a fundraising wheelchair race around the town streets, then everyone moves into the Town Hall at 12pm for what can only be described as a family-friendly racing carnival without the horses: the event features phantom race calls, local racing identities, a fashion parade and lots of refreshments.

Loxton Historical Village Alive Day

This is a real treat for children. Loxton Historical Village is an extremely realistic 1800’s town, complete with a main street, shops, a bank and a (slightly scary) doctor’s surgery. On its “Alive” days the Loxton townsfolk are on hand to sell home-made bread at the old-fashioned bakery, forge horseshoes at the blacksmith’s shop, man the pie cart, and help the kids up onto the fabulous carousel for a ride.

150th Anniversary Celebrations at the Adelaide Botanic Garden
